About 1 h 19 min of reading32 chapters

Songs and Rhymes of a Lead Miner is a small collection of verse by Thomas Grierson Gracie, who worked in the lead mines of the Lowther Hills in southern Scotland, around the villages of Leadhills and Wanlockhead, the highest in the country. Written largely in Scots, the poems include descriptive pieces about the hills, the mines and the weather, songs, verses in memory of friends and fellow workers, a letter in rhyme and its answer, a tribute to Burns, and poems addressed to the local men who went to the First World War and to those who came home. It is working-class verse of a kind once common in Scotland, and a record of a community that has since vanished. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
