Poems on various subjects, religious and moral
Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, published in London in 1773, was the first book of poetry by an African American author. Phillis Wheatley had been taken from West Africa as a child, sold in Boston to the family of John Wheatley, and taught to read and write; by her teens she was writing verse. The volume opens with a statement by leading citizens of Boston attesting that she had written the poems herself. Among them are To Maecenas, On Being Brought from Africa to America, the elegy on George Whitefield that first made her name, To the University of Cambridge in New England, To the Earl of Dartmouth and On Imagination, written in polished couplets after Pope.
