Poems of Henry Vaughan, Silurist, Volume II
Henry Vaughan, the Welsh poet who called himself the Silurist after the ancient people of his native Breconshire, is best known for the religious verse of Silex Scintillans. This second volume of his poems collects his secular work and later verse. After a biographical note on his family, his time at Oxford, the Civil War and his twin brother, the alchemist Thomas Vaughan, and a bibliography, it gives the Poems of 1646, with love poems to Amoret and a version of Juvenal's tenth satire, then Olor Iscanus of 1651, with its poems on friends and on the river Usk, and Thalia Rediviva of 1678. These pieces show the younger, worldly poet before and beside the visionary. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
