This edition of 1893 brings together the verse of Adam Lindsay Gordon, the English-born horseman who became Australia's first widely read poet, with a memorial poem and a preface by his friend Marcus Clarke. It includes the two collections published in his lifetime, Sea Spray and Smoke Drift of 1867 and Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes of 1870, together with miscellaneous poems and the dramatic lyric Ashtaroth. Here are The Sick Stockrider, How We Beat the Favourite, The Swimmer, From the Wreck and Ye Wearie Wayfarer, poems of riding, racing, the sea and a stoic melancholy that Australians took as their own. Gordon, a steeplechase rider and briefly a member of parliament, shot himself the day after Bush Ballads appeared. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
