Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates, 3rd ed. Volume 4
The fourth and final volume of George Grote's Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates, in the third edition of 1888, is given over to Plato's longest works. Grote abstracts the Republic book by book and then criticizes it, questioning whether its justice is justice at all and objecting to its censorship and its subordination of the individual; he goes on to the Timaeus and the fragmentary Kritias, the Laws and the Epinomis, and closes with an appendix and a general index to the four volumes. Grote reads Plato as a utilitarian and a liberal reads him, with respect for the questions and resistance to the answers. The work was first published in 1865. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
