Grote narrates the Spartan seizure of the Cadmea at Thebes and the subjugation of Olynthus, the liberation of Thebes, the battle of Leuctra in 371 and the rise of Epaminondas and Pelopidas, the founding of Messene and Megalopolis, the Theban invasions of the Peloponnese and the battle of Mantinea in 362. Two further chapters turn to Sicily, from the Carthaginian invasions after the Athenian disaster to the despotism of the elder Dionysius at Syracuse, left unfinished here.
