Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates, 3rd ed. Volume 2

About 12 h 37 min of reading22 chapters

The second volume of George Grote's Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates, here in the third edition of 1888, continues his dialogue-by-dialogue examination of Plato's works. Beginning with the two Alkibiades dialogues, it proceeds through a further dozen of the shorter and middle dialogues, summarizing each and then subjecting it to criticism. Grote, the historian of Greece and a Benthamite radical, admired Plato as a questioner more than as a system-builder, and he treats the dialogues as separate inquiries rather than parts of one doctrine. His arguments with the German scholars of his day fill the footnotes. The work was first published in 1865. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
