Pearls of Thought

About 5 h 10 min of reading29 chapters

Pearls of Thought, published in 1881, is a book of short quotations compiled by Maturin M. Ballou, a Boston editor and travel writer who had already produced a larger Treasury of Thought. The extracts, often a single sentence, are drawn from ancient and modern writers, philosophers, poets, preachers and statesmen, and are arranged alphabetically under subject headings, from A to Z, on virtues, vices, emotions and the conduct of life. Each is credited to its author. Ballou meant the book as a small store of wisdom to be dipped into at random, and the dedication to his wife of more than forty years sets its gentle, reflective tone. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
