Pan Tadeusz
The Last Foray in Lithuania
Pan Tadeusz, published in Paris in 1834, is Adam Mickiewicz's epic of Polish-Lithuanian gentry life on the eve of Napoleon's campaign against Russia. In 1811 young Thaddeus returns to his uncle's manor of Soplicowo, where an old feud with the Horeszko family over a ruined castle is about to flare into a last armed foray, while the mysterious monk Father Robak works in secret for the national cause. Written in exile, the poem recalls a vanished world of hunts, feasts, lawsuits and courtships with humor and longing, and it is still read in Poland as the national epic. Maude Ashurst Biggs's translation carries the subtitle The Last Foray in Lithuania and comes with notes and a pronunciation guide. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first book is free.
