Orlando Furioso
Orlando Furioso, published in its final form in 1532, is the great chivalric epic of the Italian Renaissance, written by Ludovico Ariosto for the Este court of Ferrara as a continuation of Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato. Against the background of Charlemagne's war with the Saracen king Agramante, it follows the paladin Orlando, driven mad by his love for the elusive Angelica, the warrior maiden Bradamante and her beloved Ruggiero, ancestors of the Este, and dozens of knights, ladies, sorcerers and monsters through forty-six cantos of interwoven adventure, including Astolfo's flight to the moon to recover Orlando's wits. William Stewart Rose's verse translation, made between 1823 and 1831, keeps the ottava rima of the original. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
