Meno

by Plato

Translated by Benjamin JowettAbout 1 h 29 min of reading3 chapters

Meno is one of Plato's shorter and most frequently read dialogues, presented here in Benjamin Jowett's translation with his introduction. The young Thessalian aristocrat Meno asks Socrates whether virtue can be taught, and Socrates replies that he cannot say until he knows what virtue is. Their attempts to define it fail one after another, and when Meno complains that one cannot search for what one does not know, Socrates answers with the theory that learning is recollection of knowledge the soul possessed before birth, demonstrating it by leading an untaught slave boy through a geometrical proof. The dialogue ends inconclusively, with the Athenian politician Anytus angry and the suggestion that virtue may come by divine dispensation.
