Euthyphro

by Plato

Translated by Benjamin JowettAbout 37 min of reading2 chapters

Euthyphro is one of Plato's shortest dialogues. Outside the court of the king archon, Socrates, who is about to be tried for impiety, meets Euthyphro, who is prosecuting his own father for murder and is quite sure he knows what piety is. Socrates asks him to define it. Each answer fails: piety is what the gods love, but the gods disagree; it is what all the gods love, but do they love it because it is pious, or is it pious because they love it? That question has troubled theologians ever since. Benjamin Jowett's translation, with his introduction, presents the dialogue in the clear Victorian English that made Plato available to generations of readers. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
