Gorgias

by Plato

Translated by Benjamin JowettAbout 3 h 58 min of reading2 chapters

Gorgias is one of Plato's longer dialogues and among the most dramatic. Socrates questions the celebrated teacher of rhetoric Gorgias about what his art actually is, then his pupil Polus about whether the orator's power is worth having, and finally the ambitious Callicles, who argues openly that justice is a convention of the weak and that the strong should take what they can. Against him Socrates maintains that it is better to suffer wrong than to do it, and that the only life worth living is the examined one, closing with a myth of the judgment of souls. This edition presents Benjamin Jowett's translation with his introduction. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
