Letters to His Son, Complete

by Lord Chesterfield

On the Fine Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman

About 19 h 27 min of reading322 chapters

Philip Dormer Stanhope, fourth Earl of Chesterfield, wrote to his illegitimate son Philip from the boy's fifth year until the young man's death in 1768, more than four hundred letters that were never meant for print and were published by the son's widow in 1774. They are a complete course in becoming a man of the world: Latin and history for the schoolboy, then, as Philip travels through Europe, instruction in manners, conversation, dress, dancing, the management of women and ministers, the avoidance of laughter and of awkwardness, and the uses of dissimulation. Samuel Johnson said they taught the morals of a whore and the manners of a dancing master, and generations have read them with pleasure anyway.
