Lectures on the true, the beautiful and the good
Victor Cousin first gave these lectures in Paris in 1817 and 1818, and later revised them into a single book that served as the summary of his philosophy. O. W. Wight's English translation, made with Cousin's approval, appeared in 1854. The work is in three parts. The first, on the true, argues for universal and necessary principles of reason and traces them to God, with a chapter warning against mysticism. The second, on the beautiful, examines beauty in the mind and in objects, the nature of art and the different arts, closing with French art of the seventeenth century. The third, on the good, sets out an ethics of duty against the ethics of interest. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
