Ionica

by William Johnson Cory

About 1 h 33 min of reading93 chapters

Ionica gathers the poems of William Cory, the Eton master born William Johnson, whose small volume first appeared anonymously in 1858. This third edition of 1905 adds a biographical introduction and notes by A. C. Benson. The poems are brief, polished and melancholy, steeped in Greek and Latin literature and in the life of a school: memories of pupils and friends, partings, the passing of youth, war and English history. The collection includes "Heraclitus," Cory's famous version of an epigram by Callimachus beginning "They told me, Heraclitus, they told me you were dead," and "Mimnermus in Church." The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
