History of Indian and Eastern Architecture
History of Indian and Eastern Architecture, published by James Fergusson in 1876, was the first comprehensive account of the buildings of India and the countries influenced by it. Fergusson, a Scottish merchant turned architectural historian who had traveled widely in India, surveys the Buddhist stupas, rails and rock-cut monasteries of Sanchi, Ajanta and Karli, the Jain temples of Mount Abu and Gujarat, the Hindu temples of the north and of the Dravidian south with their towering gateways, the Indo-Aryan style of Orissa, the Himalayan and Kashmiri forms, the Muslim architecture of Delhi, Gujarat, Bijapur and the Mughals, and finally the buildings of Burma, Siam, Java, Cambodia and China. Hundreds of woodcuts illustrate the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
