A History of Architecture in all Countries, Volumes 1 and 2, 3rd ed.
From the Earliest Times to the Present Day
James Fergusson's History of Architecture in All Countries was the standard English survey of the subject for the second half of the nineteenth century. This edition brings together the first two volumes of the third edition, revised by R. Phené Spiers and published in 1893, which cover ancient and medieval building. A long introduction sets out Fergusson's principles of architectural beauty, and a second part applies his ethnographic scheme to the arts of different peoples before the historical chapters begin with Egypt and Assyria and carry the story through Greece and Rome into the Christian architecture of Europe. Fergusson had spent years in India and judged every style by its honesty of construction, which gives the book a decided voice.
