James Fergusson's History of Architecture in All Countries, from the Earliest Times to the Present Day was a pioneering attempt to survey the building of the whole world. This first volume of the third edition, revised by R. Phené Spiers and published in 1893, opens with Fergusson's essay on the principles of architecture, from beauty and proportion to ornament, color and imitation, and a section relating styles to the races that produced them. It then covers ancient architecture, beginning with Egypt, before turning to Christian architecture, from Byzantine building to the Romanesque and Gothic of Italy. Hundreds of plans and engravings accompany the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
