Hidden Symbolism of Alchemy and the Occult Arts
Hidden Symbolism of Alchemy and the Occult Arts is the English title of Herbert Silberer's Problems of Mysticism and Its Symbolism, published in Vienna in 1914 and translated by the American psychiatrist Smith Ely Jelliffe in 1917. Silberer, a member of Freud's circle, takes an eighteenth-century Rosicrucian parable and reads it twice: first as a dream, in the manner of psychoanalysis, and then as an allegory of alchemical and hermetic teaching. From the two readings he argues that the symbols of mysticism and the symbols of the unconscious are the same material, and that the alchemists' work of transmutation describes an inner process of introversion and regeneration. The book anticipates Jung's later studies of alchemy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
