Translated by Thomas Wentworth HigginsonAbout 22 min of reading34 chapters

Fifteen Sonnets of Petrarch, published in 1903, is Thomas Wentworth Higginson's small selection from the Canzoniere, the sequence of poems Francesco Petrarca wrote over some forty years for Laura, the woman he first saw in Avignon in 1327 and continued to address after her death in 1348. Higginson, the Massachusetts abolitionist and man of letters who had been Emily Dickinson's correspondent, prints each sonnet in Italian with his own English version facing it, and prefaces them with an essay, Sunshine and Petrarch, written on the Rhode Island shore, in which he argues that the poems belong to summer light and open air rather than to the library. The choice favors the sonnets of memory and loss. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
