Early Greek philosophy

About 9 h 59 min of reading33 chapters

Early Greek Philosophy, published by John Burnet in 1892 and revised in later editions, is a study of Greek thought from Thales to the generation before Socrates. Burnet, professor of Greek at St Andrews, treats the Milesians, Pythagoras and his school, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, the later Pythagoreans, Leucippus and Democritus, giving in each case a translation of the surviving fragments followed by a reconstruction of the doctrine and an account of the ancient testimony. He insists that the early philosophers were primarily scientists seeking a rational account of the world and not mystics, a view that shaped the study of the Presocratics in the English-speaking world for half a century.
