Democracy and Social Ethics
Jane Addams, founder of Hull House in Chicago, published Democracy and Social Ethics in 1902, drawing on her years among the immigrant workers of the city's West Side. She argues that democracy must become a social and moral practice as well as a form of government, and that personal virtue is not enough in an industrial society where people's lives are bound together. Chapters on charitable effort, filial relations, household service, industrial amelioration, educational methods and political reform show the misunderstandings between the comfortable classes and the poor, from the charity visitor and the domestic servant to the ward boss. The book is a founding text of American progressive thought. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
