Chronicles of Avonlea
Chronicles of Avonlea, published in 1912, is a collection of twelve stories by L. M. Montgomery set in and around Avonlea, the Prince Edward Island village of Anne of Green Gables. Anne Shirley appears in a few of them, but most belong to other villagers: a man who has been courting the same woman for fifteen years without proposing, a proud old lady who hides her poverty, an aunt surprised by a suitor in middle age, a confirmed woman-hater shut up in quarantine with an unexpected guest, and quarrels and reconciliations of long standing. The stories are warm, humorous and occasionally sentimental, full of small-town eccentrics and late-blooming romances, and show Montgomery's gift for local character. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
