Anne's House of Dreams, published in 1917, is the fifth of L. M. Montgomery's novels about Anne Shirley and begins with her marriage to Gilbert Blythe. The couple move to a small white house at Four Winds Harbour on the Prince Edward Island shore, where Gilbert takes up his medical practice. Anne makes new friends: the retired sea captain Jim, who keeps the lighthouse and a lifetime of stories; the sharp-tongued, man-hating Miss Cornelia Bryant; and Leslie Moore, a beautiful neighbor trapped in a marriage to a brain-damaged husband, whose secret becomes the book's central drama. Montgomery balances the comedy of village life with grief and loss, and the novel is often considered the most grown-up of the series.
