Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was a Canadian novelist from Prince Edward Island, raised by her grandparents after her mother's death. She worked as a teacher and journalist and wrote hundreds of short stories before Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908, made her internationally famous; its sequels and the Emily of New Moon series followed over the next three decades. In 1911 she married a Presbyterian minister and moved to Ontario, where she wrote most of her later books, including The Blue Castle, one of her few novels for adults. Her published journals, which appeared after her death, reveal a far darker private life than her fiction suggests.
