Children of the Tenements
Jacob A. Riis, the reporter and photographer whose How the Other Half Lives exposed the slums of New York, published Children of the Tenements in 1903. In his preface he explains that he could never invent a plot: these short pieces are true stories that came to him during almost twenty-five years as a police reporter, many first printed in the Evening Sun. Set on the Lower East Side and around Bleecker Street, Mulberry Bend and Cat Alley, they tell of lost children, Christmas in the tenements, immigrant families, policemen and small acts of kindness. Some are sentimental, others grim, and together they give a human face to the conditions Riis fought to reform.
