Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

by M. R. James

About 3 h 02 min of reading11 chapters

M. R. James wrote his ghost stories to be read aloud to friends at Christmas, and this first collection, published in 1904, gathers eight of them. Their protagonists are scholars and clergymen who find something old in a library, a church or a country house and look at it too closely. In "Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book" an English antiquary buys a manuscript in a Pyrenean town; in "Number 13" a hotel room exists only at night; "Count Magnus" follows a traveler who three times wishes to see a long-dead Swedish nobleman. "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad" is probably the most anthologized ghost story in English. James's method is understatement, exact detail and a single terrible glimpse. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first story free.
