Blue eyes and diamonds

by Lemuel De Bra

About 10 min of reading1 chapters

Betty Danford has gambled away more than she can afford, pawned the diamond necklace her husband gave her as a wedding present and had a paste copy made, and now she wants Detective Harry Milholland, the man she turned down to marry Chester, to arrange for the fake to be stolen so the truth never comes out. Milholland is honest, poor and still fond of her, and the key to the south door is already on the table. Lemuel De Bra wrote crime stories for the American pulps in the 1920s, and this very short piece is a neat twist on the jewel-theft plot, told almost entirely in dialogue and finished in a few pages. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening is free.
