Croce argues that art is intuition, the expression of an impression in the mind, and that this expression is complete before any physical work is made; the painting or poem only helps to reproduce it. From this he draws consequences: art is neither imitation nor pleasure nor morality, and criticism is the re-living of the artist's intuition. The second half of the book is a history of aesthetics from antiquity to Croce's contemporaries, and the title claims that aesthetics and the philosophy of language are one science.
