A History of the Peninsular War, Vol. 5 is the fifth of the seven volumes Charles Oman published between 1902 and 1930 on the war in Spain and Portugal. It covers the eleven months from October 1811 to the end of August 1812, the turning point of the war: Wellington's winter sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, the storming of Badajoz and the sack that followed, the campaign of maneuver on the Douro and Tormes, the battle of Salamanca on 22 July, the triumphant entry into Madrid, and the operations of the Spanish armies and guerrillas and of the Anglo-Sicilian force on the east coast. Oman uses French, Spanish and Portuguese sources alongside British ones. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
