The third volume of Charles Oman's History of the Peninsular War, published in 1908, covers the sixteen months from Wellington's retreat after Talavera to the deadlock before Santarem at the end of 1810. It describes the destruction of the Spanish armies at Ocaña in November 1809 and the French conquest of Andalusia, the siege of Cadiz, the guerrilla war and the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Almeida, then Masséna's invasion of Portugal, the battle of Bussaco on the ridge above the Mondego, the retreat to the Lines of Torres Vedras and the French army's starving winter in front of them. Oman's maps and plans and his appendices on the strength and losses of the armies accompany the narrative. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
