The fourth volume of Charles Oman's History of the Peninsular War, published in 1911, covers the campaigns of 1811. It opens with Masséna's retreat from Portugal after the winter stalemate before the Lines of Torres Vedras and follows Wellington's pursuit to the frontier and the battle of Fuentes de Oñoro in May. Beresford's bloody victory at Albuera, the two sieges of Badajoz, Suchet's capture of Tarragona on the eastern coast and the autumn maneuvers around Ciudad Rodrigo complete the year, while Spanish affairs and the war in Catalonia and the south are treated in their turn. Oman worked from British, French and Spanish archives, and the volume carries maps, plans and the appendices he was known for.
