A history of the Peninsular War, Vol. 2, Jan.-Sep. 1809
The second volume of Charles Oman's History of the Peninsular War, published by the Clarendon Press in 1903, follows the fighting in Spain and Portugal from the battle of Corunna in January 1809 to the end of the Talavera campaign that September. As Oman explains in his preface, the war had broken into half a dozen separate campaigns at once: Soult against Wellesley in northern Portugal, Ney in the Asturias, Victor and Cuesta in Estremadura, Suchet and Blake in Aragon, St. Cyr in Catalonia. He traces each in turn before Wellesley's march on Madrid draws them together, using Spanish, French and British sources, with maps, plans and appendices of orders of battle.
