A Beginner's History of Philosophy, Vol. 2: Modern Philosophy

by Herbert Ernest Cushman

About 7 h 07 min of reading42 chapters

Herbert Ernest Cushman, who taught philosophy at Tufts, wrote A Beginner's History of Philosophy as a textbook for students meeting the subject for the first time, and this second volume, published in 1911, covers the modern period. It moves from the humanists of the Renaissance and the rise of natural science through Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz, then Locke, Berkeley and Hume, the French and German Enlightenment, Kant, the German idealists and the thinkers of the nineteenth century. Cushman sets each philosopher against the geography, literature and politics of his time, so that ideas appear as answers to the questions of an age rather than as abstract systems, and the plain exposition still offers a clear map of the field. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
