Woman in the Nineteenth Century
and Kindred Papers Relating to the Sphere, Condition and Duties, of Woman.
Margaret Fuller's Woman in the Nineteenth Century, first published in 1845, grew out of an essay she had written for The Dial and became one of the founding texts of American feminism. Ranging across myth, history and literature, it argues that women must be free to develop every faculty as souls in their own right, and that marriage, education and public life should be reordered on that principle. This edition, prepared by her brother Arthur B. Fuller with an introduction by Horace Greeley, adds the kindred papers: newspaper pieces on George Sand, Jenny Lind, the Irish character and women in poverty, along with private letters and journal entries, among them a letter to Mazzini. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
