Life Without and Life Within; or, Reviews, Narratives, Essays, and Poems.
Margaret Fuller drowned in a shipwreck off Fire Island in 1850, at forty, and her brother Arthur B. Fuller spent the following years collecting her scattered writings. Life Without and Life Within, published in 1860, is the last of these volumes. The first part gathers the reviews she wrote for the Dial and for Horace Greeley's New-York Tribune, where she was the first full-time book critic on an American newspaper: essays on Goethe, Beethoven, Poe, Shelley, Charles Brockden Brown, French novelists, and the narrative of Frederick Douglass. The second part contains narratives and essays, including pieces on New Year's Day and the condition of the poor, and the third her poems. It shows the range of the most learned woman of the Transcendentalist circle. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
