Margaret Fuller (1810–1850) was an American writer, critic and advocate of women's rights, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and educated by her father to a level few men of her day reached. She led conversations for Boston women, edited the Transcendentalist journal the Dial with Emerson, and in 1844 became the first full-time book reviewer on an American newspaper, Horace Greeley's New-York Tribune. Woman in the Nineteenth Century, published in 1845, was the first major American feminist work. Sent to Europe as a correspondent, she joined the Roman revolution of 1849, married the Italian marquis Giovanni Ossoli, and drowned with him and their son in a shipwreck off Fire Island.
