White-Jacket, published in 1850, is Herman Melville's novel of life aboard an American warship, drawn from his own service as an ordinary seaman on a United States frigate in 1843 and 1844. The narrator, nicknamed for the homemade white jacket that marks him out among the crew, describes the voyage home from the Pacific around Cape Horn aboard the Neversink. Through his eyes we see the divisions of the crew, the officers and their quarters, meals, drills, the ship's library, sickness, the beloved captain of the maintop Jack Chase, and above all the harsh discipline of the navy.
