About 6 h 13 min of reading46 chapters

The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade is the last novel Herman Melville published in his lifetime, appearing on April Fools' Day, 1857. It takes place in a single day aboard the steamboat Fidèle as it moves down the Mississippi from St. Louis toward New Orleans. A deaf-mute carrying a slate, a crippled Black beggar, a man in mourning, an agent of a coal company, an herb doctor and a cosmopolitan in a motley coat appear in turn, each asking the passengers for trust in one form or another, and the reader is left to decide whether they are one man or many. The book is a sequence of conversations about charity, credit and belief, satirical and hard to pin down. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
