Redburn. His First Voyage
Being the Sailor Boy Confessions and Reminiscences of the Son-Of-A-Gentleman in the Merchant Navy
Redburn, published in 1849, is the novel Herman Melville drew from his own first voyage as a young sailor. Wellingborough Redburn, the son of a once prosperous family fallen on hard times, sets out from New York as a green hand on a merchant ship bound for Liverpool, equipped with little more than his brother's shooting jacket and an old guidebook that belonged to his father. He endures the contempt of the crew, the malice of the sinister sailor Jackson and the hardships of life before the mast, and in Liverpool he finds poverty and misery far beyond anything he had imagined. Part comic, part grim, it is a sharp study of innocence meeting the world, written just before Moby-Dick.
