War and Peace

by Leo Tolstoy

Translated by Louise Maude and Aylmer MaudeAbout 37 h 39 min of reading386 chapters

War and Peace, completed in 1869, follows several Russian families through the Napoleonic wars, from the salons of Petersburg in 1805 to the burning of Moscow in 1812 and its aftermath. Pierre Bezukhov, the awkward illegitimate heir to a fortune, Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who goes to war to escape his marriage, and Natasha Rostova, who grows from a child into a woman over the course of the book, are at the center of a cast of hundreds. Tolstoy moves between ballrooms and battlefields, between the intimate and the historical, and interrupts his story to argue about what actually moves armies and nations. This edition is the translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude, who knew Tolstoy and worked with his approval. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
