Master and Man
Master and Man, written in 1895, is one of the stories of Leo Tolstoy's later years, here in the translation of Louise and Aylmer Maude. The merchant Vasili Andreevich Brekhunov, impatient to close a bargain for a wood before rivals from town can bid, sets out in a sledge on a winter afternoon with his laborer Nikita, an easygoing drunkard who is sober that day. They lose the road in a snowstorm, find a village, refuse shelter and lose the road again. Through the night that follows Tolstoy traces what each man thinks about as death approaches, and the master's final act reverses everything he has lived by. The story is short, plain and among the most admired things he wrote. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
