Resurrection

Resurrection, published in 1899, is the last of Leo Tolstoy's full-length novels. Prince Dmitri Nekhlyudov, serving on a jury in a provincial court, recognizes the prisoner accused of murder as Katusha Maslova, a servant he seduced and abandoned ten years earlier, whose fall into prostitution began with him. When she is wrongly condemned to Siberia through a procedural error, he resolves to follow her, to give up his land and to marry her if she will have him. The novel takes him through prisons, courts, government offices and the convict trains to Siberia, and it carries Tolstoy's attack on the legal system, land ownership and the official church. The translation is by Louise Maude. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
