Uncle Vanya: Scenes from Country Life in Four Acts
Uncle Vanya, staged by the Moscow Art Theatre in 1899, is Anton Chekhov's play about a country estate that has been worked for years by Ivan Voitski, called Vanya, and his niece Sonia to support the retired professor Serebrakoff, Sonia's father. When the professor arrives to live there with his young second wife Helena, the household's routines fall apart: Vanya and the local doctor Astroff both fall for Helena, Sonia loves Astroff hopelessly, and the professor proposes to sell the estate from under them. Vanya's protest, a shot that misses, changes nothing. The play ends with the visitors gone and the work resumed. This English version uses the spellings of the early twentieth-century translation.
