Plays by Anton Chekhov, Second Series
This second series of Chekhov's plays in the translation of Julius West, published in 1916, completes the English edition begun by Marian Fell. It contains his two last and greatest full-length plays, The Three Sisters, in which the Prozorov sisters in a provincial garrison town dream of returning to Moscow while their lives slip away, and The Cherry Orchard, in which a landowning family loses its estate and its orchard to the son of a former serf, as well as six short pieces: the dramatic study On the High Road, the one-act farces The Proposal, The Wedding, The Bear and A Tragedian in Spite of Himself, and The Anniversary. West's introduction places Chekhov among the dramatists of the new theater. They are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first act free.
