The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories

by Anton Chekhov

The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories is the twelfth volume of Constance Garnett's translation of The Tales of Chekhov, and it gathers stories of childhood and youth. Children watch the adult world through keyholes and half-understood conversations: little Grisha spies on the arranging of the cook's marriage, the orphan Vanka writes a letter to his grandfather "in the village," an exhausted nursemaid in "Sleepy" is driven past endurance, and in "Kashtanka" a lost dog finds a new life among a clown's performing animals. Lighter pieces such as "A Chameleon," "Oysters" and "The Swedish Match," a parody of the detective story, round out the book. Most date from the 1880s, when Chekhov was writing for the comic papers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
