Things near & far
Things Near and Far, published in 1923, is the second volume of Arthur Machen's autobiography, following Far Off Things. It opens with the road into Caerleon, the Welsh town where he was born, and then turns to his years in London from the 1880s onward: hack work for publishers, cataloguing occult books, the writing of The Great God Pan and The Three Impostors, the long labor over The Hill of Dreams, his wife's death, a period in the Order of the Golden Dawn and his years as a touring actor with Frank Benson's company. Machen writes about poverty, literary failure and the strange experiences he calls his "adventure" without self-pity and with humor; it is the best introduction to the mind behind his fiction. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
