Arthur Machen (1863–1947) was a Welsh writer, born Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Caerleon, Monmouthshire, the son of a clergyman, whose landscape of Roman ruins and wooded hills runs through all his work. He went to London poor, worked as a cataloguer and translator of Casanova, and in the 1890s published The Great God Pan and The Three Impostors, horror tales attacked for their decadence and later admired by Lovecraft. He acted with a touring Shakespeare company, worked as a journalist, and in 1914 wrote "The Bowmen," a story about phantom archers at Mons that was taken for fact and became the legend of the Angels of Mons.
