The Great God Pan
Dr. Raymond performs a small operation on the brain of a young woman named Mary, convinced it will let her see the real world behind appearances. It does, and she is destroyed by what she sees. Years later, in London, a series of respectable men die by their own hands after associating with a Mrs. Beaumont, and two investigators, Villiers and Clarke, piece together her history and her connection to the experiment. Machen tells the story in fragments, through documents and conversations, and leaves the worst of it to the reader's imagination. Published in 1894, it was attacked as degenerate and admired by Lovecraft and others who followed. The horror is pagan and ancient rather than supernatural in the usual sense. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
